Ik ben hoogleraar Media, Gender and Postcolonial Studies bij het departement Media- en cultuurwetenschappen (Graduate Gender Programme).
Mijn expertises zijn gender en postkoloniale kritiek vanuit een vergelijkend en interdisciplinair perspectief. Mijn onderzoek beweegt zich tussen verschillende disciplines: de postkoloniale studies, het transnationaal feminisme, de comparatieve literatuurwetenschap, mediawetenschap en conflictstudies. Ik richt me op thema’s zoals de koloniale geschiedenis van Italië, Europese migratie, visuele cultuur en postkoloniale cinema.
Ik studeerde Engels en Commonwealth Studies aan de University of Bologna (Italië) en de University of Sussex (UK). Aan de Universiteit Utrecht promoveerde ik in de comparatieve literatuurwetenschap en gender studies.
Ik was gastonderzoeker aan de University of California, Riverside (2004) en gasthooglerar aan de University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) bij het Women’s Studies-programma (2006). Daarnaast was ik Gemma Scholar aan Rutgers University (2014). In 2017-2018 was ik Visiting Professor aan Columbia University, department of English and Comparative Literature (2017-2018) en Visiting Scholar aan de New York University, NYU Steinhardt, Department of Media, Culture and Communication (MCC) en senior visiting fellow LSE (London School of Economics), 2020-2022.

Momenteel ben ik projectleider van het NWO Open Competitie Project "Virtual Reality as Empathy Machine: Media, Migration and the Humanitarian Predicament” dat een interventie maakt in het veld van VR voor humanitaire communicatie. Het project onderzoekt de voor- en nadelen van VR voor immersie en empatie door het gebruik van technologische mediatie. Het richt zich op de rol van VR bij humanitaire acties, met name op de vraag of VR gebruikt kan worden als 'empathie machine', waarbij gebruikers en gemediatiseerde anderen dichter bij elkaar gebracht worden. Centraal staat de impact van VR voor humanitaire acties, in het bijzonder acties die zich richten op migratie- en vluchtelingenproblematiek.

Ook ben ik betrokken bij het  MSCA project 'Euterpe: European Literatures and Gender from a Transnational Perspective', dat gefinancierd wordt door Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions. Ik ben verantwoordelijk voor het work package (WP) 'Transnational women intellectuals, multilingualism and decolonising European pedagogies' dat uitgevoerd wordt in samenwerking met de University of Coventry. Dit WP wordt mede geleid door Birgit Kaiser en heeft Auxiliadora Castillo Soto als PhD.

Ik ben projectleider geweest van het ERC Consolidator-project CONNECTINGEUROPE: Digital Crossings in Europe. Gender, Diaspora and Belonging.' Dit project tracht de relatie tussen migratie en digitale technologie te onderzoeken, in het bijzonder de wijze waarop de ‘verbonden migrant’(‘connected migrant’) bijdraagt aan nieuwe vormen van Europese integratie en cosmopolitisch burgerschap. Samen met het team onderzoek ik digitale diaspora en de relatie tussen die diaspora en gender, etniciteit en het gevoel ergens bij te horen (‘affective belonging’). Innovatief aan het project is, dat er gebruikt wordt gemaakt van een interdisciplinaire onderzoeksmethode, geïnspireerd door de geesteswetenschappen en de sociale wetenschappen, die mediawetenschap, postkoloniale theorie, digitale geesteswetenschappen en genderstudies samen brengt.

Ik ben project leider geweest van een NWO project internationalisering in de gesteswetenschappen: "Postcolonial Intellectuals and their European Publics" (PIN) die brengt een internationale en interdisciplinaire netwerk van Europese onderzoeken samen om de rol van postcoloniale intellectuele te bestuderen. Wat zijn postkoloniale intellectuelen, wie van hen zijn momenteel het meest invloedrijk en op welke manier leveren ze een bijdrage aan een nieuw idee van ‘Europa’? Dit innovatieve internationale netwerk daagt de traditionele definitie van de ‘intellectueel’ uit door de rol van migranten, kunstenaars, activisten en sociale bewegingen te benadrukken.

In 2010 richtte ik het Postcolonial Studies Initiative (PCI) op, een platform dat onderzoek op het gebied van postkoloniale studies moet stimuleren door het organiseren van lezingen, conferenties, masterclasses en een filmvertoningen, de publicatie van een maandelijks nieuwsletter en de aanwezigheid via een website en FB pagina.
