Dr. Freek L. Bakker is assistant professor in inter-religious dialogue, comparative religion, Hinduism and Buddhism at the Department of Theology of the Faculty of Humanities of the Utrecht University.

He obtained his PhD degree at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam in 1993. His thesis dealt with the modernisation of Hinduism on the island of Bali in Indonesia. After 1995 he concentrated his research on Caribbean Hinduism. He wrote many publications, the most important of them being a book entitled Hindoes in een creoolse wereld (Hindus in a Creole World, 1999).

In the meantime he also wrote some articles about the inter-religious dialogue of Hindus and Christians.

Since 2003 he is conducting research into the issues of religion and film. In 2009 he published a book about films about Jesus, Rama, Buddha, and Muhammad and the reaction of the Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims on these films. The title of the book was The Challenge of the Silver Screen: An Analysis of the Cinematic Portraits of Jesus, Rama, Buddha, and Muhammad.
