You are considered a visitor, when your are:

  • a PhD candidate, post-doctoral researcher, guest lecturer or guest researcher

    • whose stay is financed by a 3rd party
    • with an unpaid position at Utrecht University
    • with a Utrecht University grant
    • financing your stay with personal funds
  • a member of a delegation
  • a visiting professor 
  • an individual visitor

The faculty of Veterinary Medicine offers 3 possibilies for postgraduate education:

Research at the faculty of Veterinary Medicine

Research of the faculty of Veterinary Medicine is since 1992 managed by the Institute of Veterinary Research (IVR). Close links between the IVR and the Wageningen University Research Center (WUR) assure a well co-ordinated veterinary research programme of high quality in The Netherlands. Research at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine contributes to the research programmes of the Graduate School of Life Sciences of Utrecht University.

Postgraduate research training programmes like the Master of Science programme 'Veterinary Science'. (18 months) and the 4-years PhD programme are linked to the IVR research programmes and are taught in English.

Training for a PhD degree

There are two ways to enter the PhD programme of the faculty of Veterinary Medicine:

1. Application for a PhD position

The faculty announces occasionally positions for (international) PhD students  who are offered an AIO contract. Vacancies for PhD students, the AIO positions, are announced on the website of Utrecht University.

2. PhD students with a scholarship or own funding can apply for admission

Fees and subsistance costs

PhD students who have a scholarship that covers the tuition fee for 4 years and the subsistence costs or who have their own funding, can apply for admission to the PhD programme.
The tuition fees are EUR 12.000 per year. The subsistence costs are approximately EUR 1.600 per month. PhD candidates with a scholarship or their own funding can contact the Office for International Cooperation for further information.

Candidates should  provide the following documents as (scanned) e-mail attachments:

  • Curriculum vitae with list of publications
  • Letters of recommendation from 2 referees (including the employer)
  • Description of present work
  • Letter of motivation for choosing Utrecht and the research field of preference.
  • Certified copies of university degrees, certified transcrips and copy of passport
  • Statement of scholarship or copy of scholarship application form or proof of adequate own funds.
  • English language certificate (minimum score required internet based Toefl 93 IELTS 6.5 and minimum 6.0 for writing) .
