Admission
Students can only study at the Faculty of Social Sciences if:
- They have been nominated by their home university.
- And more importantly, if there is an exchange agreement*
with our faculty or Utrecht University.
* Please check with the international office of your own university if there
is an agreement.
How to apply?
To apply for an exchange period at the Faculty of Social Sciences you need
to have a confirmation from your university:
- As soon as we receive the confirmation from your university, we will send you the "Application Form for Admission as an Exchange Student". NOTICE: After your application you will receive a form on which you can fill out the courses you intend to follow. See "Course descriptions".
- Print and fill out the "Language Proficiency form".
- Send in a recent English Transcript of Records (It has to be an official print of your exam results at your home university).
NB: without an English Transcript it's impossible to register for courses!
- One passport photo.

Accommodation
You can also apply for accommodation. Housing is scarce in Utrecht.
When you apply on time there should not be a problem in finding accommodation for you exchange period. More information about housing and application procedures.
Language requirements
We recommend that you have completed at least 1½ years of full-time study at your home university. Before you send in any documents, contact your home university coordinator to find out how you can be nominated for the exchange.
At Utrecht University we expect our exchange students to be proficient in English language. Ask your home university coordinator whether you are required to take an English language test, or need to complete a language proficiency form. The following test scores indicate the level of English that is required:
Bachelor:
- IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.0 overall band, 5.5 for writing. IELTS is the test preferred by Utrecht University.
- TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 83. Institutional scores are not accepted. The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
- Cambridge Certificates: Advanced English or Proficiency in English, minimum score C.
Master:
- IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing.
- TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 93, institutional scores are not accepted (the TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062).
- Cambridge Certificates
Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade.
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.
Deadlines
The Faculty of Social Sciences can only accept exchange students who send in their application forms before the deadlines:
- Semester 1 and full year > 1 May
- Semester 2 > 1 October
Students who visit Utrecht through exchange programmes from other faculties or through the University wide International Office should get in touch with the contact person of the corresponding faculty or University
wide International Office. They will then send you all the necessary forms.
