Dr. Joris C. Verster invited as Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia
From 14 November to 6 December 2012 dr. Joris Verster is invited to give lectures at Swinburne University about: ‘Alcohol hangover: causes, consequences and treatment’, ‘Alcohol mixed with energy drinks: misconceptions, myths and facts’, ‘Drugs & Driving research: the Dutch approach’.
Further he will discuss future research collaboration between Utrecht University (Joris Verster) and Swinburne University (Andrew Scholey, Con Stough). At Utrecht University we conducted a large scale survey into the effect of mixing alcohol with energy drinks (PhD Student: Lydia de Haan)
This survey will be replicated nationwide in Australia in 2013 (Andrew Scholey/Sarah Benson), U.S.A. (Jonathan Howland/Damaris Rohsenow) and U.K. (Chris Alford). In addition, research collaboration will be intensified in the field of human psychopharmacoly, in particular drugs & driving and alcohol hangover research.
Dr. Saal van Zwanenberg Prijs 2012 uitgereikt aan prof.dr. Berend Olivier
De Dr. Saal van Zwanenberg Prijs 2012, een prestigieuze prijs voor uitzonderlijke prestaties op het vlak van geneesmiddelenonderzoek, gaat naar prof. dr. Berend Olivier (Universiteit Utrecht), mede-ontdekker van het antidepressivum fluvoxamine dat in 1984 op de markt kwam. Hij is één van de weinige Nederlanders die daadwerkelijk een geneesmiddel op de markt heeft gekregen. De prijs is op 2 oktober uitgereikt in Lunteren tijdens de FIGON Dutch Medicines Days.
Olivier is hoofd van de afdeling Farmacologie van het departement Farmaceutische Wetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht en wetenschappelijk directeur van het Utrechts Instituut voor Farmaceutische Wetenschappen. In ruim 40 jaar bouwde hij een indrukwekkend wetenschappelijk oeuvre op met meer dan 500 publicaties in toonaangevende tijdschriften over farmacotherapie en farmacologie. De Utrechtse hoogleraar heeft zich toegelegd op onderzoek op het gebied van neurobiologie en agressie, angststoornissen, depressie en schizofrenie. Bij Solvay Pharmaceuticals werkte hij als gedragsfarmacoloog aan de ontwikkeling van fluvoxamine, een geneesmiddel dat depressieve klachten vermindert.

Excellence in Pharmacy Practice 2012
The mission of the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Utrecht University, clearly identifies teaching and research as core-tasks. Public health and society, in general, are considered as important sources of inspiration.
The department recognises that it would not be able to fulfill its successful leadership role in both the pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy practice, without the encouragement, dedication and excellence of pharmaceutical scientists and practitioners all over the world.
In this spirit of recognition two awards are given out: one (even years) for Excellence in Pharmacy Practice and the other (odd years) for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Research, to persons who have demonstrated excellence either in pharmacy practice or pharmaceutical sciences, or in both.
To strengthen the idea of reaching out to the pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical research community worldwide, the successful nominees should be selected from candidates outside the Utrecht department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

How to nominate:
• Every even year the award will be given to an individual who has shown over the years excellence, vision and leadership in pharmacy practice.
• The award can only be given to a single person. Persons directly connected to the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences are not eligible for the award.
• Nominations should be electronically submitted to prof.dr. M.L. Bouvy before November 1, 2012, M.L.Bouvy@uu.nl.
• The nomination package should consist of a motivation and one or more supporting letters together with a CV of the nominee.
• A review panel (nomination committee) consisting of renowned experts appointed by the board of the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences will judge the nominations.
• The award will be presented December 18, 2012.
• The award winner is requested to give a lecture in conjunction with the awarding ceremony.

De Universiteit Utrecht staat vandaag in de schijnwerpers van de Nederlandse media door de berichtgeving over de verplichte Matchingsactiviteiten voor 1e jaars m.i.v. 2013-2014.

Rector Bert van der Zwaan heeft hierop vandaag een toelichting gegeven en dit gesprek is aangevuld met interviews gehouden onder 1e jaars Farmacie studenten. Deze studenten hebben namelijk al meegedaan aan de door ons verplicht gestelde Matchingsactiviteiten, omdat Farmacie een van de pilotstudies is voor dit onderdeel uit het BaMa3.0 plan.
Vanavond zijn deze items waarschijnlijk te zien in het NOS journaal, in het RTL nieuws en op RTV Utrecht.

Matchingsactiviteiten Farmaceutische Wetenschappen 2012 bijna afgerond
Voor het cohort 2012 is de pilot Matchingsactiviteiten bij Farmaceutische Wetenschappen bijna afgerond.
Na aanmelding via Studielink en het invullen van de enquête, hebben rond de 375 studenten deelgenomen aan een van de negen Matchingsdagen. Uit deze groep zijn ongeveer 75 studenten uitgenodigd voor een individueel Matchingsgesprek.
De Matchingsdagen zijn gekenmerkt door een positieve sfeer. De aanwezige aanstaande studenten waren goed voorbereid en werden gedurende de dag begeleid door een enthousiaste groep Farmacie docenten. Naast de bijdrage van deze docenten, is een belangrijke oorzaak van het slagen van de Matchingsdagen gelegen in het feit dat een groot aantal Farmaciestudenten bereid was een deel van de begeleiding tijdens de dagen op zich te nemen. De uitwisseling tussen Farmaciestudenten en de aanstaande studenten leidde tot geanimeerde gesprekken, over de meest uiteenlopende aspecten van de studie. De reader met de uit te werken casussen en het inhoudelijke programma van de dag heeft voor veel studenten een completer beeld verschaft van de inhoud van de studie Farmacie en zo bijgedragen aan het enthousiasme waarmee veel studenten zullen starten in september.
De pilot Matching zal geëvalueerd worden met de betrokkenen (docenten, Farmaciestudenten en Studiezaken) binnen Farmaceutische Wetenschappen, om in kaart te brengen waar de procedure van Matching verbeterd kan worden.
Daarnaast wordt het cohort 2012 de komende jaren gevolgd. Resultaten behaald in het 1e jaar van de Bachelor zullen een primair onderdeel vormen van het onderzoek naar het Matchingsproces binnen Farmaceutische Wetenschappen.

Professor Martin Fussenegger from the ETH Zurich, Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering, presented a glimpse of the future to the researchers of the Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences. On June 15th, the institute held its 20th anniversary symposium.
Professor Fussenegger, who was the invited speaker symposium of UIPS, explained how he could remotely switch on and off gene regulation at certain locations of the body. His futuristic and funny examples overwhelmed the audience. Clever combinations of sensors and gene expression could eventually lead to bioactivated and bioresponsive cures.
Alumni-speakers
Other speakers at the symposium were the UIPS alumni Annemieke Kolkman (KWR Watercycle Research Institute), Sjef de Kimpe (Prosensa), Dennis Löwik (Radboud University), Bart Metselaar (Enceladus) and Tjeerd van Staa (Clinical Practice Research Datalink). They provided perfect examples of the importance of pharmaceutical scientists for our society.
Best PhD-publication
Scientific articles from Lieke van den Elsen, Jin Zhang, Christian Frese, Roberta Censi and Marloes Bazelier were nominated for the best PhD publication of 2011. Christian Frese won the prize, for his heavily cited MS methodology article. The award for the most cited UIPS article ever, was shared between professors Wim Hennink and Albert Heck, for work on hydrogel design and phosphopeptide enrichment respectively.
Teacher of the year
Stefan Koppenaal received the teacher of the year award from the student society Unitas Pharmaceuticorum, but the students had wonderful laudatios for the runners-up Karin Slot, Henk de Jong and Ton de Boer as well.
