Molecules & Medicine symposium huge success!
It was quite a challenge: 27 short lectures in one day. But chairmen Berend Olivier and Rob Liskamp managed to keep the speakers at the Molecules & Medicine Symposium on 27 January 2012 on a short leash.
Around 170 students and staff members received only a glimpse of the full extent of drug-related research on this campus. Speakers from Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Hubrecht, UMCU and Veterinary Medicine, and by affiliation Sanquin and Genmab, showed their expertise, and what kind of collaboration they were looking for. During the extensive breaks, the contacts were made, as shown on the series of photographs (shot by Milko Vernooy).
“This is exactly what I meant 2 years ago”, said Sylvia Kuipers, who started her PhD work at Pharmaceutics full of creative ideas. Eefjan Breukink from Biomembranes found the High throughput screening, he was looking for, in the person of David Egan of the UMCU´s Cell biology. Rob Liskamp made contact with the UMCU groups looking for molecules, after exclaiming “Molecules: that is us!” during his presentation. We can only hope that the new collaborations will be established via joint grant proposals.
It was impossible not to be impressed by the Utrecht achievements and infrastructure. We have everything that is needed to tackle todays challenges in making or using drugs. All we needed to do, is look to the opposite side of the road.
The research focus area Drug Innovation came to the conclusion to host this symposium again next year. There are at least 27 speakers who did not get a chance to present their groups yet. In the meantime, we hope to append new profiles from Principal Investigators to the symposium booklet, that can be found at www.uu.nl/science/uips

UCFA start nieuw onderzoeksprogramma voedselallergie
Op 15 december is de nieuwe samenwerkingsovereenkomst van het ‘Utrecht Center for Food Allergy’ (UCFA) formeel bekrachtigd. Hiermee wordt de intensieve samenwerking op het gebied van voedselallergie tussen TNO, het UMC Utrecht en de Universiteit Utrecht verder uitgebouwd. UCFA onderzoekt de factoren die van invloed zijn op het ontstaan van voedselallergie. Daarnaast richt UCFA zich op het ontwikkelen van nieuwe mogelijkheden voor de behandeling van voedselallergie.
UCFA onderzoek naar voedselallergie
Voedselallergie is een gezondheidsprobleem voor een belangrijk deel van de bevolking. Het is nog onduidelijk welke factoren exact een rol spelen bij het ontstaan van voedselallergie en welke een bijdrage kunnen leveren aan preventieve of curatieve behandelingsmogelijkheden. Om hiervoor nieuwe aanknopingspunten te vinden hebben de partners van het UCFA een nieuw gezamenlijk onderzoeksprogramma vastgesteld. Doel is het ophelderen van de factoren die een rol spelen bij het ontstaan en de behandeling van voedselallergie. Daarbij ligt de nadruk op identificatie van biomarkers voor allergeniciteit en allergie. Biomarkers spelen een centrale rol bij het beter voorspellen van klinische reacties in voedselallergische patiënten, het voorspellen van de allergeniciteit van (nieuwe) voedseleiwitten en het bepalen van de effectiviteit van immunotherapie of preventie van voedselallergie.
Samenwerking sinds 2002
Sinds 2002 werken de partners al samen aan de problematiek rond voedselallergie. De samenwerking heeft geleid tot een aanzienlijke wetenschappelijke output met een duidelijke maatschappelijke impact en praktische toepassingsperspectieven (zie www.ucfa.nl). De partners van het UCFA hebben onder andere bijgedragen aan het rapport van de Gezondheidsraad ‘Voedselallergie’ (maart 2007), waarin aanbevelingen staan voor de verbetering van de diagnostiek en de aanpak van de ‘may contain problematiek’. Op basis van informatie over de laagste dosis waarop een patiënt allergisch reageert (drempelwaarden) is een model ontwikkeld om het risico van een voedingsproduct in te schatten. Daarnaast is het belang van identificatie van specifieke allergenen voor de diagnostiek aangetoond. Experimentele modellen voor voedselallergie zijn ontwikkeld waarmee fundamentele en toepassingsgerichte kennis verkregen wordt voor het vaststellen van allergeniciteit van (nieuwe) voedseleiwitten en nieuwe mogelijkheden voor preventie en therapie van voedselallergie kunnen worden onderzocht.
Met de nieuwe samenwerkingsovereenkomst kan de kennis en expertise de komende jaren verder worden uitgebouwd.

Aletta Kraneveld is the new chair of FIGON
Aletta Kraneveld, associate professor of Pharmacology, has accepted to be the new chair of FIGON, during the Dutch Medicines Days. She is the successor of clinical pharmacologst Dick de Zeeuw (RUG).
FIGON is the alliance of all medicines researchers in The Netherlands and responsible for the journal Medicines (previous names are C2W Medicines and Conceptuur) as well as the annual Dutch Medicines Days in Lunteren. An impression of this three-day event can be found on Youtube. The entire programme can be found online. Many awards were presented on October 3, 4 and 5. The Utrecht PhD students Ankie Harmsze (NVFKB thesis award), Gillina Bezemer (NVF poster award – third prize), and Gwen Mulder (national PhD competition – third prize) shared in the glory.
Keynote speakers included Terry Kenakin, receiving the Ariens Award for his contributions to quantitative pharmacology, Tim Wells giving a wonderful TIPharma lecture about the successful “Medicines for Malaria Venture”, and Roel Fonville, responsible for stimulating Life Sciences in The Netherlands.
International researchers often mention to be jealous of the unique FIGON alliance, where medicines research from basic chemistry to clinical use, come together to share their interest in that common theme: medicinal drugs. Professional organizations like KNCV, NVF and KNMP contribute, as well as companies, but especially research institutes like UIPS, LACDR and the Public Private Initiative TIPharma.
Aletta Kraneveld has been active in the FIGON board for some time, as well as in the DMD organisation. She is a former board member of the NVF, so FIGON is in capable hands for the years to come. We sincerely hope and expect that her new responsibilities will have a synergistic effect on her Utrecht responsibilities in teaching and research.
FIGON Dutch Medicine days: Award winning research
Dinsdag 4 oktober tijdens de FIGON Dutch Medicine Days, heeft Gillina Bezemer de FIGON Poster Award ontvangen voor haar poster “Consequences of chronic pulmonary TLR9 activation in the lung and beyond.”. Gillina is een Ph.D. student onder begeleiding van professor Gert Folkerts en Dr. Aletta Kraneveld bij de divisie Farmacologie van het Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculteit Bètawetenschappen, Universiteit Utrecht. De award bestaat uit een cheque ter waarde van 250 euro. Het onderzoek wat zij presenteerde op dit FIGON congres richt zich op luchtwegaandoeningen en meer specifiek op de rol daarin van een receptor (TLR9) die geactiveerd wordt door bacterieel DNA. Met behulp van een specifiek molecuul wat analoog is aan een gedeelte van bacterieel DNA, toonde ze aan dat TLR9 betrokken is bij de inductie van luchtwegontstekingen, verminderde luchtwegfunctie en harthypertrofie. Deze kennis kan bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van nieuwe medicijnen voor de behandeling van chronische ontstekings ziektes. Dit onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd binnen het platform van het Top Instituut Pharma in nauwe samenwerking met Ferry Ossendorp en Dmitri Fillipov van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum.
Utrecht University News
