Mathematical Sciences

The master Mathematical Sciences is composed of several specializations closely related to lines of active scientific research at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Utrecht. The system of specializations is intended to optimize both freedom and structure in the Masters programme. It is flexible enough to leave considerable freedom to a student with wide interests, while at the same time it provides guidance to students with a more focused interest.

Mathematical Sciences has the following specializations:

Programme outline:

  • Mathematics courses            58 ects
  • Other Master courses            15 ects
  • Thesis research (2nd year)    47 ects
    Total                                  120 ects

If you enroll in the master Mathematical Sciences, you must choose a specialization. We will assign a tutor, who is a researcher in this specialization, with whom you will make a course plan.

Changes of specialization are also allowed. The mandatory requirements are such that a change of specialization will not delay  your study.

Utrecht University also offers a Honours programme in Theoretical Physics and Mathematical Sciences for excellent students.
