Mathematics

Department of Mathematics

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science of Utrecht University. The department consists of two institutes:

Mathematical Institute

The Mathematical Institute accommodates the researchers in Mathematical Sciences. It aims at a wide coverage of mathematics at a high research level. Virtually every core area of mathematics is represented by members of the Institute. This is reflected in the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes, in which the student can choose from a broad range of  subjects.

The Mathematical Institute employs about 24 tenured staff, about 25 PhD students and 10 post doctoral researchers. There are 250 undergraduate (bachelor) students and 80 students who follow mathematics courses at graduate (master) level.

Freudenthal Institute

The Freudenthal Institute is the research group for Mathematics Education. It aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the fields of arithmetic and mathematics education, with an emphasis on primary, secondary and vocational education. This goal is pursued through scientific research, education, curriculum development and services.

The Freudenthal Institute (FI) is part of the Freudenthal Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (FIsme), one of the faculty-wide institutes. The Institute harbours about 10 tenured staff, about 8 PhD students and 30 researchers on a project-oriented basis.
