The department has 9 full chairs, 5 professorships by special appointment, over 70 members and about 50 PhD-students. The department is part of the Faculty of Science, Utrecht University.

Cooperation
The department maintains strong relations with the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research TNO, the master organiszation of over 500 companies in the ICT-branch (ICT~Office, in Dutch), and the Netherlands organization for distance learning OU. The department coorperates closely with TNO in the Center for Advanced Gaming and Simulation AGS, which has its home base in Utrecht.
