Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Utrecht University is internationally recognised as a leading institution for teaching and research.

Every year, a large number of students choose to study Chemistry here. The result is a close-knit, active group of students who stimulate each other and enjoy an intensive experience during their time at university. An important part in this is played by the student society USS Proton. The Department also participates in a European student exchange programme.

The Department conducts cutting-edge research in biochemistry, biomolecular structure, catalysis, and hard and soft condensed matter. This research is based on three pillars:

• Biochemistry and structural biology: Research into the structure-function relationship of biomolecules (at the Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research).
• Nanomaterials: Research into the physics and chemistry of interfaces and nanomaterials (at the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Research) 

The Department of Chemistry also has a Chemistry Education section, which is unique in the Netherlands. This section forms part of the Freudenthal Institute for Science and Mathematics Education.
