Klimaatopwarming 200 miljoen jaar geleden door kettingreactie
Planten en dieren stierven massaal uit door vrijkomen methaan
De klimaatopwarming die 200 miljoen jaar geleden een massa-extinctie veroorzaakte, hangt samen met grote hoeveelheden methaan in de atmosfeer. Het methaan, een veel sterker broeikasgas dan CO2, kwam waarschijnlijk vrij uit de zeebodem nadat vulkanisch CO2 een relatief kleine opwarming van het klimaat had veroorzaakt. Dit concluderen paleoecologen van de Universiteit Utrecht uit hun onderzoek, dat zij 22 juli publiceren in het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Science.

Planten zweten steeds minder door CO2-stijging
De stijgende concentratie CO2 in de atmosfeer leidt tot minder verdamping door planten, omdat ze de huidmondjes op hun bladeren aanpassen. Deze afnemende verdamping heeft mogelijk gevolgen voor de waterkringloop en het klimaat. Onderzoek van biologen en milieuwetenschappers van de Universiteit Utrecht en Universiteit van Indiana (USA) toont dit aan. De bevindingen worden op 14 februari in een tweeluik gepubliceerd in het wetenschappelijk tijdschrift Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Invloed van klimaatverandering op biodiversiteit nauwkeuriger te bepalen
Aantal plantensoorten prehistorisch Groenland daalde circa 80%
Tijdens de opwarming in het Trias-Jura-tijdperk is het aantal plantensoorten op Groenland met circa 80% gedaald. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van de Universiteit Utrecht. Onderzoekers konden de invloed van klimaatverandering op biodiversiteit nauwkeuriger bepalen door studie van fossiele bladeren en die van prehistorisch stuifmeel te combineren. Het onderzoek is gepubliceerd in het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

10 oktober 2009:Fossil Greenhouse world was warm from pole to pole
Temperatures of sea water fringing South Pole were tropical 50 million years ago
The temperature difference between equatorial and polar sea waters was minimal during the extremely warm ‘Greenhouse world’ 60 to 50 million years ago. This is the main conclusion drawn by a team of scientists from Utrecht University, the Netherlands, the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research and the University of California, Santa Cruz. The team of scientists, headed by Peter Bijl, show that circum-Antarctic sea water exceeded 30ºC at that time. The results were published in Nature this week.
