Complaints, objections and appeals
Complaints desk for students
If you feel that you have not been treated properly by an employee of Utrecht University, or if you disagree with a ruling that affects you personally, there are several ways in which you can undertake action.
You can submit a complaint, an objection or an appeal.
Complaints
A complaint pertains to behaviour conducted towards you. A complaint cannot be submitted against general rules and regulations. (If you disagree with a general regulation, you can contact the Students Interest Body.)
Informal
First, see if you can find an informal solution. Contact whomever it is that you have a problem with, and try to come to a satisfactory solution together. It is also possible to submit complaints, suggestions and comments regarding the educational programme with your college tutor / student mentor or the Student Desk Economics. USE complaints coordinator (Caro Bliekendaal, complaintsofficer.use@uu.nl) can also advise you on what to do.
Formal
If you consider your complaint to be serious enough, or if it is not possible for you to find a satisfactory solution on your own accord, then you can start a formal procedure:
- Complaints about your study programme and faculty are dealt with by the complaints coordinator of your study programme or faculty.
>> More information
- The university complaints coordinator handles complaints regarding central university services.
>> More information
- • You have experienced inappropriate behavior such as sexual harassment, aggression and/or violence or discrimination. If you have a complaint concerning such behavior, you may contact the confidential counsellor.
>> More information
Objection and appeal
- An appeal against a decision made by the Board of Examiners can be submitted when this decision is in writing and addressed to you personally, such as your exam results. Appeals are dealt with by the Examination Appeals Board.
>> More information
- An objection can be submitted against a written, individual decision made by the Executive Board that concerns you personally, such as your enrolment or awarding financial aid.
>> More information
Before you decide to submit an objection or an appeal you can talk to your academic counsellor or student counsellor and decide if it is worth starting a formal procedure. Take the deadline by which you must have submitted your objection or appeal into consideration: there is a six-week deadline.
You can also contact Student Services for general information about submitting an objection or appeal.
