Utrecht lawyers file formal brief with the American Supreme Court on the liability procedure between Nigerians and Shell
On Wednesday 13 June 2012, Cees van Dam, Professor by Special appointment of European Private Law, and postdoctoral researcher Dr Liesbeth Enneking, both affiliated with the Molengraaff Institute for Private Law of Utrecht University, together with a number of other Dutch lawyers filed an ‘amicus curiae’ brief, i.e. a formal statement of their view, with the American Supreme Court on the liability procedure between Nigerians and Shell.
The immediate cause for the procedure is the possible involvement of multinational Shell in human rights violations against Nigerian environmental activists in the nineties.
