Medieval Culture

The research group Medieval Culture studies medieval sources as forms of communication. Attention is paid to all the different forms – verbal, written and visual – and their interaction. The central questions are: who communicated with whom, for what reasons, and what kinds of message (intellectual, emotional, instructive, inciting, etc.) were exchanged?

The Medieval Urban Literacy project is studying the influence of cities on the continually growing use of written communication from an international perspective. The Medieval Memoria Online project is collecting and studying works of art from the Low Countries with a function in the commemoration of the dead.
