Expertisecentrum Literair Vertalen
The Expertisecentrum Literair Vertalen (Centre of Expertise for Literary Translation, ELV) is a collaborative project of Utrecht University and the Antwerp Lessius Hogeschool, set up by the Nederlandse Taalunie (the Dutch Language Union). The ELV aims at stimulating the quality of translations into and from the Dutch language by giving courses and promoting expertise. This is done by:
Courses and translation workshops
The ELV organises high-quality courses and other activities for both new and experienced literary translators:
- Summer course Literary Translations for translators from the Dutch;
- Intensive Course Literary Translations in Dutch;
- Some in-depth courses;
- Translation Workshops on Location: literary translation workshops which can be set up anywhere in the world, in any combination of languages and which fit in, as much as possible, with local literary events. The aim of these workshops is to interest future talented translators in a career as professional literary translator;
- Study days dedicated to subjects relevant to literary translations, for instance translation didactics or the position of the Flemish translator.
Facilitating tutorships
The ELV carries out tutoring programmes for translators into and from Dutch. On a one-to-one basis and in close collaboration with an experienced translator, a new translator translates a literary novel.
Sharing knowledge
The website of the ELV offers information for literary translators and aspiring literary translators. Also publishers and educational institutions will find relevant information about literary translations here. For instance, you will find more information about our translation courses and tutoring programmes. In addition, you can find the latest news in the field of literary translations, an overview of literary translation events, information about translation courses all over the world and a database containing literary translators translating from and into the Dutch language.
