Research Schools in the Netherlands 

The Faculty of Humanities acts as the lead organisation for the following research schools:

  • Netherlands Research School of Genderstudies (NOG)
    The Netherlands Research School of Genderstudies (NOG) provides a variety of courses for Dutch and International PhDs. The NOG is the national platform for the research activities conducted by a number of universities, and is one of the leading European institutions for research and education in the field of gender.

  • Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT)
    The Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT) is a cooperative effort by seven universities, the Meertens Institute and Universiteit Leuven. It supports a broad range of linguistic research. Each year, the LOT organises a Winter School and a Summer School for doctoral candidates in linguistics. The LOT also publishes doctoral candidates’ research results in the LOT Dissertation Series.

  • Nederlandse Onderzoekschool voor Theologie en Religiewetenschap (NOSTER)
    The Netherlands Research School for Theology (Nederlandse Onderzoekschool voor Theologie en Religiewetenschap, NOSTER) is a cooperative effort of eight academic institutions. It provides a training programme, specialist courses and an annual conference for doctoral candidates and Master’s students.

  • Netherlands School for Research in Practical Philosophy
    The Netherlands School for Research in Practical Philosophy (NSRPP) (onderzoekschool Ethiek) is a cooperative effort by several Dutch universities that provides a training programme in Ethics for doctoral candidates, allowing them to embed their research in a broad network of researchers. The NSRPP is also a forum for joint research. Furthermore, it organises study activities for researchers.

  • Dutch Postgraduate School for Art History (OSK)
    The Dutch Postgraduate School for Art History is a cooperative effort by a number of Dutch universities and cultural institutions. It is the institution that performs the most important art historical research in the Netherlands. The goal of the OSK research and education programme is to help doctoral candidates develop their specific disciplinary research in the field of art history.

  • Netherlands Graduate School for Literary Studies (OSL)
    The Netherlands Graduate School for Literary Studies (OSL) is a cooperative effort by more than 90 researchers at six universities in the Netherlands. The researchers at the graduate school work together on a research programme with a priority on modern and contemporary literature and media.

  • CERES - Research School for Resource Studies for Development
    CERES is the national research school for development-oriented research in the Netherlands. It includes eight Working Programmes, which organise seminars and other activities. Furthermore, CERES offers courses to PhD students. Utrecht University's Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance acts as the lead organisation for this research school.

  • Huizinga Institute (Research Institute and Graduate School of Cultural History)
    The Huizinga Institute provides post-doctoral education and stimulates research in the field of cultural history. The institute’s research concentrates primarily on the past five centuries of Western cultural history, with an emphasis on the Netherlands and Europe.

  • Netherlands Institute for Cultural Analysis
    NICA is the Dutch national research school in cultural analysis, studies, and theory; generally, in interdisciplinary and theoretical humanities research. The school offers graduate courses for research master and PhD students, and serves as a professional network for affiliated scholars. Presently based at the University of Amsterdam, the school welcomes the participation of scholars and students of all Dutch universities. Go to the website.

  • Netwerk Politieke Geschiedenis (Political History Network)
    Aim of the Netwerk Politieke Geschiedenis is to bring together Dutch and Flemish PhD students in the field of political history, enabling them to exchange reserach experiences. The network offers trainings as an addition to the various university's graduate education programmes. In order to achieve this goal, the network regularly organises study days, workshops and research seminars.

  • N.W. Posthumus Institute
    The N.W. Posthumus Institute (NWP) is an inter-university research school in the fields of economic and social history. It coordinates academic research in the Netherlands and the Dutch-speaking provinces of Belgium and offers a national PhD programme and six interdisciplinary research programmes. The institute has a strong international orientation, with close ties to 15 faculties and institutes in the Netherlands and Belgium.

  • National Research School in Classical Studies (OIKOS)
    OIKOS is a cooperative effort of six Dutch universities. It organises study programmes for doctoral candidates studying Graeco-Roman antiquity. It also stimulates and coordinates research and promotes the creation of an international network of researchers in the field.

  • Netherlands School for Medieval Studies 
    The Netherlands School for Medieval Studies is a cooperative effort of the research groups of six Dutch universities active in the field of medieval studies. The school bundles the activities of the six participating universities to offer a national research programme in medieval studies for doctoral candidates.

  • Research school for Media Studies
    The Netherlands Research school for Media Studies (RMeS) is a national network of academic experts in media research whose ambition it is to provide excellent, state of the art education in media studies to PhD candidates and research master students, and
    to provide a platform for knowledge exchange and representation of Dutch media scholars in networks, councils etc.
