Utrecht University Graduate School of Humanities

The Graduate School of Humanities at Utrecht University offers outstanding Master’s programmes and PhD courses for talented Dutch and international students. Our Research Master's and PhD's are closely linked to the excellent research programmes of the Faculty of Humanities. Our other Master’s programmes, besides being closely linked to our faculty's research, have a stronger focus on an academic career outside the universities.

Utrecht University is one of Europe’s leading research universities, according to the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities. The Faculty of Humanities is particularly renowned for its research in the fields of Linguistics, Social and Economic History, Medieval Studies, Philosophy and Women’s Studies.

International orientation

Our teaching has a strong international orientation. There is a constant flow of international guest-lecturers and visitors. Students come from all over Europe, but also from the USA, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Courses are taught by internationally acclaimed academics, many of whom have held professorships at the most prestigious universities in the world.

High quality standards

From our students we expect a lively interest in academic issues within the humanities, eagerness to study and a high standard of past performance. We demand a lot from them, but in return we give them ample opportunity to develop their own insights and talents.

Career perspectives

Our Master’s degree is an ideal stepping stone for a career in academia, but it also offers a strong basis for any career that requires a deeper understanding of academic questions related to the field of the humanities, e.g. in journalism, publishing, politics, policy, language and speech technology. Our PhD programmes focus both on research-related topics and on personal development and professional skills that will benefit you in any further career.
