This Master's programme is a joint venture between the Political History Group and the Social and Economic History Group of the Department of History of the Humanities at Utrecht University. It focuses on the institutions, that is to say, on the rules of the game and on the organizations, which evolved from the late Middle Ages to the present at the local, national, and levels in Europe. How and why did they receive their particular form, how did they work, and what was their impact on society at large.

These and other questions will be discussed in a European context from the Middle Ages, roughly the past millennium. That era has witnessed a peculiar transition from multinational empires with a layered sovereignty, fragmented over cities, estates, and feudal orders, to national and sovereign states with a great hold over their citizens. The Master's programme offers students the option to develop their own interests and concentrate on the Middle Ages, the Early Modern Era, or the past two centuries.
