Courses

Taking courses within and outside Utrecht University is part of your PhD candidate training. There are academic courses and skills courses. You receive your (obligatory) curricular training in the context of LOT, the Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics. The Graduate School of Humanities offers courses on general research skills, personal effectiveness and career perspectives.

Planning your courses

If you want to take any courses, make sure you research them well in advance, and include them in your work plan or, after your first year, in the travelling plans included in your annual progress report. Discuss the options with your supervisor to help you decide how to invest your time. Don't forget to include any required reading in your planning.

Please apply for funding through the regular travel application channels. If you want to attend a course that was not included in your workplan or progress report, please include your supervisor's approval in your travel application.

Choice of courses

There is a wide ranges of courses to choose from:

MA Linguistics, Utrecht University
Consult the MA Linguistics courses on the availability and content of current and future courses. Please inform the PhD coordinator which course you'd like to take and consult with the lecturer to see whether you can be fitted in. If the course is compulsory for MA students or has a limited number of places, MA students take priority.

MA programmes in the Netherlands
Several Linguistics groups and institutes in the Netherlands offer courses. Approach the relevant lecturer or programme coordinator wether you can join the course. Travelling costs can only be reimbursed after prior consent by UiL OTS, to be applied for by e-mail to the PhD coordinator.

LOT Summer or Winter School
LOT Schools are the prime place to look for academic courses in your specific field. You are expected to participate in at least 3 Schools during the first two years of your project.

PhD candidates at UiL OTS are entitled to LOT School participation and travel/accommodation free of charge. Accommodation is offered only for Schools in Groningen and Leuven, otherwise you are expected to commute by train. See the LOT website for further details.

Other Summer Schools
A number of Summer Schools are regularly visited by UiL OTS PhD candidates. Examples are ESSli, EGG, LSA etc. If you are interested, please include them in your workplan and check whether the programme for the relevant year actually offers any relevant courses. You can apply for funding by sending an email to the PhD coordinator. Please do so as soon as possible after the programme becomes available, and don't forget to include references to relevant courses.

Comprehensive courses at other universities
Occasionally, eminent researchers teach intensive courses at Utrecht University or elsewhere. Enrolment and commuting costs will be reimbursed without prior consent (enrolment not exceeding 200 euros). If attendance requires accommodation, please apply for funding with the PhD coordinator.

Skills courses
Dutch courses are offered by UiL OTS on demand. Please contact the PhD coordinator with your request for a course, preferably including some 5 more names of fellow students or colleagues interested in participating.

Other skills courses are offered by the Graduate School of Humanities. You will receive regular invitations to participate in these courses as they are organised.
