Conference ‘Grand Challenges for the Humanities?’ 

ECHIC aims to speak up on behalf of members in dialogues with the European Science Foundation, the EU and others on matters concerning humanities research and to establish a network for mutual benefit and possible identification of partners for European research collaboration. The Centre for the Humanities at Utrecht University is co-founder of ECHIC.

Themes

The general conference theme ‘Grand Challenges for the Humanities?’ is organised around four scientific panels:

1. Environmental Humanities
2. Civic responsibility of the Humanities
3. Global Humanities
4. Cognitive Humanities

The programme furthermore consists of:

• a session for coordinators and administrators of Humanities centres and institutions
• an Institutional Forum for international policy makers in the field of the Humanities
• a cultural programme on ‘Digital Humanities’, which will highlight the relevance of classical Humanities fields such as musicology, media studies and linguistics for contemporary digital culture
• a business meeting for all ECHIC members

Call for papers

The organisers welcome paper proposals for the four themes of the scientific panels mentioned above. Please send your 300-word abstract for a paper on one of these themes plus a short bio to info@echic.org. The deadline for proposals is 15 January 2012.

You can register for this conference until 5 February 2012 by filling out the form on the ECHIC website: www.echic.org. Please use the comments section of the form to indicate whether you are working as a coordinator/administrator at your institute. The registration fee is € 300 (including 2 lunches, 2 dinners and refreshments). Instructions for payment will be sent to you once your registration has been confirmed.
