Experimental rock deformation / HPT-lab

Main activities of the group

The Experimental Rock Deformation Group at Utrecht conducts research on the mechanical behaviour and transport properties of Earth materials at conditions pertaining to the Earth’s crust and upper mantle. This is accomplished by means of experimental research coupled with microstructural studies of the active microscale processes plus microphysical modelling of these processes.

Experimental work in the HPT laboratory

Our experimental work consists of deformation experiments and transport property measurements conducted in the High Pressure and Temperature (HPT) Laboratory, which the group runs. The lab is equipped with a wide range of facilities with which we can reproduce pressure and temperature conditions relevant to the Earth’s crust and upper mantle. The group is often referred to simply as the HPT Group.

Context of research and teaching

Our research activities fall within the Earth Materials theme of the research programme on Geodynamics of the Solid Earth. Within the Earth Sciences education programme (Bachelor and Master programmes), the group is responsible for courses in areas ranging from earth material properties to structural geology.
