Organization
The Physical Geography Research Institute is organized in two research groups
1.Landscape Ecology, Geo-information and Hydrology (LGH)
This group combines field measurements and remote sensing data with modelling techniques, while studying land cover dynamics, surface and ground water, degradation of land surface, and mobilisation of sediment. The LGH group includes the chairs:
- Physical Geography - Land Degradation and Remote Sensing (Prof.dr. S.M. de Jong)
- Geographical Hydrology (Prof.dr.ir. M.F.P. Bierkens)

2. Coastal Dynamics, Fluvial Systems, and Global Change (CFG)
This group combines process-geomorphological and quaternary geological research of coastal and fluvial systems, bridging between measurement timescales of seconds to days and depositional record timescales of years to millennia, up to glacial cycles. The CFG group includes the chairs:
- Physical Geography - Coastal Morphodynamics (Prof.dr. P. Hoekstra)
- Physical Geography - Global Change Geomorphology (Prof.dr. H. Middelkoop)
