Supporting research and education

The Laboratory for Physical Geography supports both research and education. Our laboratory work serves a number of purposes:

  • the study of physical processes under well-controlled conditions,
  • provide input data to process models
  • calibration and validation of these models.

Research support

The research support is diverse, from designing and constructing experimental facilities and logistic field support, floodplain coring and setting up of meteorological stations.

The development, design and construction of innovative instrumentation are important tasks of our technical staff which include four electronic and field engineers. This frequently results in the development of new sensor technology and measuring devices that are state-of-the-art and are not commercially available.

Teaching support

The Laboratory staff assists with teaching activities during fieldwork by preparing materials (transport, augers, GPS devices, meteorological and hydrological instruments), providing field assistance, and instruction to students using the equipment. Our engineers also play a vital role in the calibration of equipment and take care of maintenance.
