Research and society

Through the valorisation of its knowledge, Utrecht University is able to contribute to economic development and the solving of social problems. Examples of socially relevant research studies include studies on climate change, controlling infectious diseases and changing family relations. Many of Utrecht University’s scientists work in close liaison with social institutions, research organisations and industry. This research often involves a quest for innovative solutions.

Knowledge transfer

In order to fully exploit its knowledge Utrecht University closely collaborates with business companies and social organisations. Utrecht University’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation advises and supports businesses and organisations interested in contract research, consultancy or collaboration with Utrecht scientists.

Stimulating entrepreneurship

Utrecht University also encourages its staff and students to use their academic knowledge to develop products and services in order to start up their own businesses. The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation provides advice, assistance, management support and property services for (emerging) entrepreneurs. The Utrecht Centre for Education in Management and Entrepreneurship conducts studies and provides courses on entrepreneurship. So far, many successful businesses have been launched based on scientific research at Utrecht University and University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht).
