Anyone who wants to charge a smartphone, tablet or electric bike while sitting outside can now do just that in Utrecht Science Park (De Uithof). Since today, seven solar benches can be found there – benches fitted with solar cells that generate green power. By installing the benches, Utrecht University aims to integrate solar panels into the streetscape, having already installed 4,600 on nine university buildings earlier this year.

Free outdoor charging

The seven solar benches will be spread across Utrecht Science Park. Two will be at the entrance to the Administration Building, two next to Victor J. Koningsberger building, one next to David de Wied building, one alongside the second Life Sciences Incubator and one in the Botanic Gardens. Each solar bench is fitted with four sockets that people can use to charge their smartphone, tablet or electric bike for free. However, users must bring their own charger with them. The time it takes to charge is similar to using a plug socket at home.

Towards a carbon neutral University

By 2020, Utrecht University aims to generate half of the energy it consumes through renewables, including by means of geothermal heating, wind energy and the use of sunlight. Ultimately, Utrecht University aims to be carbon neutral by 2030. Niekol Dols, deputy director, Corporate Real Estate & Campus: “Partly for that reason, we have installed 4,600 solar panels on nine university buildings in Utrecht Science Park De Uithof. The panels generate one million kWh of electricity every year. That is the equivalent of the energy consumed by 320 households. To make this sustainability measure visible at street level as well, we have added solar benches to the street furniture.”

Sustainable Utrecht University

Utrecht University accepts its social responsibility by actively contributing to a sustainable society ecologically, economically and socially. It does this in two ways: through the sharing of scientific knowledge, and as an inspiring business example. Striking a good balance between People, Planet and Profit is always the starting point.
