Hunting El Niño

The El Niño phenomenon has been very active again this year, causing worldwide weather anomalies, especially around the Pacific Ocean. Last year, a team of Utrecht University went to Ecuador to investigate the regional impact of El Niño.  The team gathered sediment cores from high Andean lakes from which they can reconstruct the history of this important climate system which also influences weather patterns in Europe. This video shows expedition highlights and the background of the study.

The study is part of a NWO-funded research project at the Department of Physical Geography.
