Obtaining a PhD
Each year, approximately 550 PhD candidates from Utrecht University complete their research with a doctoral thesis.
Students who wish to prepare a doctorate after completing a research-oriented Master's programme then choose a PhD programme. During this four-year track, PhD candidates work under the supervision of a professor on a research project that culminates in a doctoral thesis or series of articles in scientific journals.

PhD positions
Each year, approximately 500 PhD candidates from Utrecht University complete their research with a doctoral thesis. Apart from applying for the PhD positions offered by Utrecht University, candidates who have obtained a Master's degree can also submit a proposal for a PhD project themselves.
