Miranda Boone (1967) has worked at the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology, Utrecht University since 1994. In 2003 she was appointed associate professor of Criminal Law and Criminology. After completing her law studies at VU University Amsterdam in 1992, she worked for two years at the Ministry of Justice (WODC) researching large fraud cases.
Boone’s PhD thesis focused on community sentences and was followed by scientific articles in the fields of sentences, prison systems and probation. In a recent book dedicated to Frank Bovenkerk, Boone wrote on the prison section for terrorists (Er zitten hier alleen moslims, 2009); she also collaborated in replicating Rijksen’s research on Detenees’ Attitudes (Meningen van Gedetineerden: 50 jaar later, 2008); published a report on the involvement of judges in the effectivity of sanctions (De tenuitvoerlegging: rechterlijk maatwerk?, 2008); and, together with Martin Moerings, edited a book on the changes in the Dutch Prison System (Dutch Prisons, 2007).
Boone coordinates the BA Minor in Criminology, participates in various criminological and juridical courses, e.g. An Introduction to Criminology and Sanctions, and supervises various Master’s theses. She also teaches a number of Master’s courses including Criminology and Criminal Law, and Comparative Penology.
Boone is a member of the Prisons Section of the Council for Criminal Law Practice and Youth Protection (Raad voor Strafrechtstoepassing en Jeugdbescherming); the editorial board of the Journal for Criminal Justice ‘Process’; and a board member of the Dutch Criminological Association (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Kriminologie, NVK).
