Dina Siegel (1962) has been professor of Criminology at the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal law and Criminology, Utrecht University since 1 January 2009. She studied Social Anthropology and Sociology at Tel-Aviv University in Israel and obtained her PhD in cultural anthropology in 1996 at VU University Amsterdam, writing a thesis on Russian migrants in Israel. Between 2001-2008, she worked as assistant professor at the department of Criminal Law and Criminology at VU University Amsterdam.
Dina Siegel conducts research on various forms of transnational organised crime, and has published numerous books and articles on the post-Soviet Russian mafia, women trade, prostitution, XTC smuggling and trafficking, terrorism, underground banking and, more recently, on crime in the international diamond trade. A second line of research focuses on the field of cultural criminology, currently exploring the links between crime and music. Siegel is also a founding member and board member of CIROC (Centre for Information and Research on Organised Crime). Among her recent books are Global Organized Crime. Trends and Developments (together with Henk van de Bunt and Damián Zaitch) (Springer, 2003); Russische Bizniz (Meulenhoff, 2005); Organized Crime. Culture, Markets and Policies (together with Hans Nelen) (Springer, 2008); and The Mazzel Ritual. Culture, Customs and Crime in the Diamond Trade (Springer, 2009).
Siegel is the coordinator of the Master’s programme in Criminology, teaching courses in Critical Reflections on Criminology, Cultural Criminology, and Core International Crimes: criminological issues. Professor Siegel also participates in the BA Minor in Criminology, in courses such as International Organized Crime, and Criminological Research.
