Faculty Council

The faculty of Humanities' Faculty Council meets at least twice a year, or whenever the dean or a council member requests an extra meeting. During these meetings (in Dutch), held at the Sweelinckzaal, Drift 21, the dean informs the council about the state of affairs at the faculty. The council meetings' procedures are documented in the rules of procedure (in Dutch).

At least once a year, the council receives information on:

  • The faculty organisation.
  • The faculty’s policies' key issues.
  • Students’ complaints.
  • Last year’s policies.

For changes or decisions on the following issues, the dean needs to seek the council's permission:

  • The multi annual plan.
  • The faculty's quality management regulation and policy.
  • The faculty part of the degree statute.
  • The faculty regulations (in Dutch).
  • The education and examination regulations of the faculty’s degree programmes, with the exception of:
    • The regulations on the content of degree programmes and exams.
    • The final qualifications.
    • The establishment of practical drills.
    • The course load.
    • The settlement of subjects, mentioned in the university council regulations.

The council has an advising role with regard to:

  • The faculty’s budget plan.
  • The faculty's reorganisation.
  • Structural cooperation with partners from within or outside the university.
  • Providing an advisory assignment to an expert from outside the university regarding one of the issues mentioned.

Members

The faculty of Humanities' faculty council (in Dutch) exists of 24 members. The faculty staff (both academic and non-academic) chooses 12 members from its midst for a period of two years. Students (in Dutch) also choose 12 student members. They are chosen for a period of one year.

The faculty council's meetings are presided over by an independent chairperson.

Staff representatives

Apart from the council meetings, the faculty council's staff representatives meet around three times a year with the dean. During these meetings, the staff representatives advise the dean on proposed measures to be taken regarding:

  • The way in which terms of employment  and of the Service Department are applied within the faculty.
  • The way in which  general staff policies are implemented in the faculty.
  • The safety, health and wellness of staff with connection to working within the faculty.
  • The organisation and working methods within the faculty.
  • The implementation of technical and economic services at the faculty.

After the staff representatives have given their advice, the staff representative’s consent is necessary for every measure the dean proposes.
