Mandatory

The mandatory is the person who has been granted a mandate to take decisions on behalf of the body which is legally authorised to do so. A mandatory at Utrecht University may be a faculty dean or a director of a service department who has been granted the authority to take a decision on behalf of the Executive Board.

A substitute mandatory may have been appointed to stand in for the mandatory in his or her absence.

The mandatory may grant his or her mandate, or part thereof, to another person. The body which was originally authorised to execute the mandated powers must approve of this so-called ‘submandate’. For example, deans at Utrecht University have granted submandates to department directors to take decisions which relate to their departments.
