Grants and Funds

This website provides general information about grants available for funding academic research, as well as the support Utrecht University can offer in the form of coaching programmes for individual grants such as the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme and the ERC.

Faculty grant offices

The faculty grant offices are the researchers’ first point of contact. The offices can inform applicants about which grants are the most suitable for them and can offer support in preparing and managing the research project.

Types of grants

There are many different types of grants: from thematic (within a specific field of expertise) to individual (to stimulate the researcher’s career) or free competition (innovative and ground-breaking research). There are also grants for travel- and accommodation expenses, equipment or conference attendance, etc. You can learn more about these grants via the research funding database Research Professional or the faculty grant office.

Open calls

Ask your grant office about open calls for grants.

Applications for amounts over 2 million

Grant applications with financial obligations of more than 2 million Euros, such as ERC Advanced Grants and NWO Groot grants, must first be approved by the Executive Board. Read more about the regulations pertaining to these applications.

Other types of research funding

Researchers can also look for funding for their projects in the form of contract research. This is academic research conducted on commission from an external party who is willing to pay for the work. For more information about cooperation with businesses, see: Research and Society.
