The next PhACE in your career!
Many people start their PhD thinking that they will continue with a career in academia, whereas in fact only a relatively small proportion of PhDs end up in long-term academic careers. Monday 5 March and Tuesday 6 March the third edition of the ‘PHD Activating Career Event’ (PHACE) will be held. During this 2-day event PhD students in the penultimate year of their PhD can explore different career options. Do you stay in academia or not? What are the alternative possibilities and how do your skills and competencies fit in to these new career choices?
You will explore this by identifying what motivates you in work and what skills you have acquired over the years in the first workshop session. You can keep this knowledge in mind whilst learning about other career options during the rest of the two days. The second workshop session is meant to broaden or enhance your skill set by tackling skills you may not have developed fully. Whilst the third workshop session will cover skills you need when entering the jobs market.
Seven different career tracks will be explained by PhDs who now work in academia, R&D in company, teaching, consultancy, government, management, non-profit and government. Hear how they shaped their career and what they needed to develop to get to the position they have reached. There is ample time to ask questions and learn more about career options you may not have considered.

Impression of PhACE 2011
Every PhD now and then wonders: "What to do after my PhD?" We also did, and therefore we decided to apply for PhACE, hoping to get more insight into the possibilities after a PhD. Together with 60 PhD's from various disciplines we attended two days filled with workshops and presentations. Questions like "what are my skills?", "what do I want?" and "how to get there?" were treated in the workshops. In the presentations we saw examples of the directions our career could take after the PhD. Also, it was fun to meet so many PhD's in completely different research areas. After gathering all this new knowledge about our possibilities, wishes and skills, we can now start to look for our dreamjob with a happy PhACE.
