Utrecht University remains top Dutch university in Shanghai ranking 

Utrecht University rises to join the world’s top 50 universities

Utrecht University has moved up several positions to claim 50th place in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.  Utrecht University now ranks 11th in Europe and has topped the list in the Netherlands for several years now.

Key criteria

Each year, researchers in Shanghai assess more than 1000 universities, selecting the 500 best institutions for the ranking. The key assessment criteria include the number of times university staff are published in scientific journals, such as Nature and Science, and the number of distinctions, such as Nobel Prizes and Field Medals, awarded to university staff and graduates. Utrecht University scores particularly well on the citation indices and in terms of the number of publications in Nature and Science.

Top of the league

Harvard University in the United States continues to occupy the top spot. Second, third and fourth place are also held by institutions in the USA, namely Berkeley, Stanford and MIT. In fifth place, the UK’s Cambridge is the first European university in the ranking.
