Gerrit van Meer appointed new dean of the Faculty of Science 

Prof. Gerrit van Meer has been appointed dean of the Faculty of Science by the Utrecht University Executive Board. Van Meer, who now heads the Chemistry Department, will serve as dean for a period of 5 years starting 1 January 2011. The interim dean, Prof. Jan van Ree, plans to appoint Prof. Ieke Moerdijk (research) and Prof. Rens Voesenek (education) as vice deans on the same date.

Gerrit van Meer (1953) studied Biology and Chemistry at Utrecht University, where he later also earned his PhD in Biochemistry. He worked at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg from 1981 to 1987, after which he worked at Utrecht University for ten years as a cell biologist. In 1997, Gerrit van Meer became a professor in cell biology at university medical centre AMC Amsterdam. In 2001, he renewed his affiliation with Utrecht University, working as a professor of membrane enzymology at the Bijvoet Centre, as chair of the graduate school of Life Sciences and thereafter as head of the Chemistry Department. He has served in numerous positions on scientific advisory committees and editorial boards and has an extensive network of international contacts. Additionally, he was appointed member of EMBO and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
